Wallpaper Paste

The task for these pieces was to use wallpaper paste and create textures and patterns.

To do this I had to mix up wallpaper paste and then add in either paint or ink and mix that up as well. Once this was done and I was happy with te colour I had made I then painted the whole page using the paste. To make the patterns and textures i used a number of different items and techniques: piece of a can, tissue paper, folding paper and placing other pieces of paper onto the paint to take away any excess.

3D Installation

This task was to be a group project in which we were asked to create a 3D installation made up of two pieces. One on the table and another hanging from the ceiling. As a group we decide to make origami birds flying over a nest.

Originally we were going to make the nest all black so that it contrasted against the birds when it was finished. After trying to make the nest a few different ways that ended up not working we  shredded a mix of black and white paper. We then weaved the paper together just like birds would do when making their nests.

As we were keeping all the birds white we ended up making little decorations to attach to them, using skills we had been learning over the past few weeks, by doing this the birds didn't look as plain.

Digital Collages

These patterns were made using InDesign. To make them I made a rectangle and then clicked on the yellow tab while holding the Alt button to change the shape. Once I had the shape I wanted I then used the Step and Repeat method to create my pattern.

.

For the one on the left I chose a palette of colours so that I could make it look like the  pattern faded  gradually into a different colour.

The one on the right is simply the same pattern except that I used only two colours tiled to see how different it would look from the first one, where there was a small range of colours.

These digital collages were put together using images that were provided for the paper collages that were done earlier.

The left collage was done using one image and copying it then slightly changing the rotation of it. Once I was happy with the placement I then copied the top half to then reflect and make the bottom half. After that I picked two colours that worked well together and alternated them.

The watercan collage was done using Step and Repeat then again choosing two colours I liked that worked together then alternated then to make the pattern.

WASTE

For this task I was to come up with a word that was associated with paper and create a piece of work that showed the effect of the word I chose.

I ended up chose to do the word WASTE as I wanted to show how easy it is to use paper everyday but not realise just how much of it you use and throw away.

With this work I ended up cutting the word WASTE out of several pieces of newspaper paper. After this I then started layering the letters on top of on another so that by the time I had finished the word WASTE was overflowing off of the original piece of paper.

This part of the task  was to take the piece of work that I made using a word associated with paper. As my word was WASTE and it is to do with paper I filled up a recycling bin so that I ended up overflowing the bin just like the word on my work was overflowing off of the paper. I then attached my piece of work to the bin so that it looks as if it as well is overflowing out of the bin.

I used the bin overflowing as I was trying to get across the point that we waste a lot of paper without even realising.

Letterforms

This task was to create letterforms using only plain paper.

These were my original letterforms. I cut out triangles within the letters and then cut out the letters once that was done. I done this because when I went on to photograph my final outcome I wanted to be able to show the shadow that came from the letters. Even though the shadows turned out vivid like I wanted and can be seen they didn't really work out as I had hoped. This was mainly due to the light from the sun moving too fast for me to be able to get decent images and shadows from elsewhere ended up getting into some of my images as well.

After I heard feedback for my first set of photographs I went back and tried to get the shadow how I wanted but unfortunately using artificial light didn't work so I decided to place the letters against a black background. Even though this isn't what I wanted I still think that they turned out quite nice against a background. I chose a black one as I thought that the letters would stand out more and the viewer would be able to see the detail inside them.

Mark Making

This task was to use several items including handmade mark makers, that were made out of juice cans, and write my name in different ways and have some contrast, whether it was the size or boldness of the ink.

This one was done using a twig and quickly drawing lines. This one doesn't have a lot of contrast apart from in certain parts in letters the ink is less see through than the rest.
For this one I chose to make three of the letters larger than the others. I chose the middle three as those are the letters that would grab the most attention when looked at. The smaller letters were done using a twig again.t
For this one I decided that instead of having just two contrasting items, I would do the whole name. I even used several different items to do the mark making which when looked at closely you can see the different marks that have been made.

Collage

These collages were created using images that were provided for the purpose of this task.

The collage on the left was made by choosing two images that matched up together so that the top
image looks as if it is standing on top of the image underneath. The right image was made by cutting the heart out of the page and then placing the boxing glove through it to make it look like the heart has been punched out

.

These two were done in a different style to the first two. To start with I structured the images on the page carefully but then tried picking up all the images and dropping them onto the page. I liked the  way that they looked after this and decided to keep them this way.
